Avoid the Bored Room: 15 Theme Day Ideas

It’s cold outside.

It’s blazing hot outside.

Kids are being kids.

This exhausted mom could use a nap.

Sometimes a monotonous school day needs new life.

Here is a list of theme days to incorporate into your homeschool day.

  • Macaroni and Math

Make old-fashioned mac n cheese or try a  new spin on it, don’t forget to use those math measuring cups!

  • Memory

Memorize a poem together.

Play memory/concentration with playing cards.

  • Multiply

Practice facts by playing the multiplication war card game. This is one of our favorite games to play during a game school day. It is a great refresher for my 4th grader and helps my 2nd grader become faster and more proficient.

How to play:

  1. Remove the Jacks, Kings, and Queens from a regular deck of cards.
  2. Shuffle
  3. Player’s place cards face down in a pile.
  4. At the count of three, both players flip over their first card.
  5. The first person to say the product of the 2 cards receives both cards and puts them in a separate pile.
  6. If both players say the answer at the same time, the cards are put in the middle of the table.
  7. The next player to win the “flip” gets the cards in the middle of the table in addition to the cards just played.
  8. The winner is the person with the most cards at the end of play.

  1. I love this! My kiddos are 2 1/2 years and 1 year, so this is just a little ahead of me. But it is one of my biggest dreams to homeschool my kids. Sometimes I doubt my ability to be able to do that, but when I see simple ideas like these it gives me hope that I’ll be able to do it! (Especially watching the educational shows 😉 )
